16 Tips to Survive Culture Shock

Culture shock is a very real experience for many people who move to another country. YOu can find below some helpful tips to accept and adapt to diverse cultures:



1. Do your research before you go. Travel guides offer good information.

 

2. Buy a guide book for the city you are heading.


3. Focus on the people traditions and customs and respect them.


4. Pack carefully to ensure that you have the appropriate clothes for your destination. You will feel more comfortable if you are properly dressed.

5. Ask friends and family to see if you can get a local contact. It’s especially wonderful to receive a personal introduction to a new culture when you travel alone.

6. Check the calendar for local festivals, celebrations and national days that may be taking place while you are there and get a bit of information on them before you go. 

7. Knowledge can help you adapt and enjoy a new culture more easily.

8. Observe carefully how people act and interact together individually or in groups, look for them.

9. Take a local walking tour will give you a close-up look at the culture but bus tours can be helpful too.

10. Befriend your hotel desk clerk or coffee shop owner that can become your local go-to person for questions.

11. Share a bit about your culture or you can exchange the cultures.

12. You can take small gifts or symbolic ones of your culture.

13. Be patient with yourself. If you are feeling culture shock, find a quiet place to relax and recharge your exploring energy.

14. No matter how hard you try, you will still stand out as a tourist. Guard your passport and other documents carefully. 

15. Don’t flash expensive jewelry or technology. Act conservatively so as not to attract the wrong sort of attention.
