Elephant rock in Iceland

The Elephant Rock is a natural rock formation found on the island of Heimaey (meaning Home Island) in Iceland in a town named “Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago” with around 4,500 residents.

Eldfell could potentially be the cause of the Elephant Rock and many other formations like it around the island.

Eldfell, means "mountain of fire" in Icelandic, is a composite volcanic cone just over 200 metres (660 ft) high on the island of Heimaey. It was formed in a volcanic eruption which began without warning just outside the town of Heimaey on 23 January 1973 and continued until 19 February.

The volcano is known to erupt without warning, forcing the inhabitants of the island to act fast with tactics that use seawater to quickly cool the moving lava before it can alter their home too drastically, destroy the town, or potentially hurt anyone. However, it has been inactive since the eruption.
