In China, about 100 kilometers to Karamay, lies the Demon City ( Moguicheng/ Windy City /Devil's Town) in Wuerhe mining site in the lower reaches of Jiamu River, northwest of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang Province.
This area, which was formed because of dry climate and strong wind, is dormant; no single person lives there.
100 million years ago there was no Demon City but a lively huge fresh water lake. Then the lake gradually rose to be become the land and the dinosaurs, fossils. And the Yadan Landform was formed in Demon City.
The Wind City looks like a huge ancient castle that has countless criss-crossing earth mounds in different heights and sizes, scattered in disorder. The uncovered stones were carved into different shapes by strong wind like shapes of demons with bared teeth; some look like ancient castles; others look like pavilions with eaves; some look like magnificent palaces standing proudly. Multicolored (red, blue, white, orange) stones are scattered in the rolling hills, seeming like lost pearls, adding mystery to the Demon City.
However, the main attraction of this Moguicheng region does not lie in the phenomenal area or its natural beauty, but of the mystery that was there.
It is called the Devil's Town because the town is a mystery until now. If you walk on a sunny day towards the castle - the castle accompanied by the breeze, then you will hear a mysterious rhythm of sweet melody that resembles a tinkling bell or 10 million small bell guitar playing along gently.
But when the fierce wind comes, sand and stones fly, and the sky instantly darkens. Strains of melody turn into a tiger's roar, baby's cries, a sound of animals being slaughtered, women's dying screams and in the end all will be changed to a shout, cry, and rage leaving you terrified and scared as a result!! If it is in the evening with dim moonlight, the Demon City turns to be more dreadful..
It is said that screaming and shouting sounds can be heard at night when wild wind passing through the earth mounds with sands and stones.
