Mount Roraima ( Island in the Clouds)

Mount Roraima looks like the summit at the top of the world… and kind of like big piece of cheese as well. It's the highest point in the Brazilian state of Roraima, towering over the landscape at a whopping 2,810 meters... and it's one heck of a photo-op.

Today Mount Roraima is a favorite stop amongst backpackers, hikers, and climbers… for obvious reasons. There are many paths that hikers can take to get to the plateau at the top of the mountain, but most are pretty perilous. Many outdoorsy folk make the trek from the Venezuelan side of the rock wall, or hire a Pemon Indian guide to help them circumvent the more dangerous terrain, and there's plenty of that.

Maverick Rock is the highest point of Mount Roraima and also the most photographed. Generally it takes hikers two days just to reach the base of the mountain, and another two to scale "La Rampa" the amazing stone staircase path that leads visitors all the way to the top.

There is only one route to the top of the mountain that can be made without any climbing gear and that's the Paraitepui route. All of the other pathways are impossible thanks to the insane cliff face that stretches hundreds of feet into the clouds.

The "island in the sky" sits 1,200 feet above a lush forest floor and is on the border of three different countries. For centuries the amazing cloud-swathed cliffs have inspired curiosity and awe in all those who see it, and most recently was the inspiration behind some of the visuals seen in the movie Up.

It's easily one of the most beautiful places in the world, and not only do visitors get the to experience the views, but also amazing rock formations that date back as far as 2 billion years.
