The Parc de la Ciutadella is a park
in Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, Catalonia. It is a green space in the heart of
Barcelona and optimal for variety of sports; for instance, boating in the lake,
cycling (both boat and bicycle can be hired), or jogging.
The park includes popular attractions like a zoo, a lake, a large fountain and several museums, interesting sculptures, and eye-catching buildings that decorate the park.
There are several statues in the
park; the most famous one, near the zoo's entrance, is a large stone mammoth
that kids love to climb on its trunk.
The most renowned attraction in the
Parc de la Ciutadella is the Parc Zoologic/zoo where about 7,500 animals
representing four hundred different species can be found. Snow Flake an albino
gorilla was the zoo's shining star, died in 2004.
The
lake characterizes the park as romantic scenery where the location,
surroundings, and visitors turn this big sector into a rather vivid place, in
which little turtles can be found on rocks, and fish dashing through the water.

The Cascada (in Spanish) or fountain is a dramatic
combination of statuary, rugged rocks, greenery and thundering water – all of
it perfectly artificial. Nearby, you can hire a rowing boat to paddle about in
the small lake.
It is designed by Josep Fontsère, and
Antoni Gaudi assisted him.

The Umbracle is one of the park's most pleasant attractions, a structure of brick and wood with the interior filled with tropical plants.

The museums are housed in some of the
park's most eye-catching structures. The Natural History Museum of Barcelona displays
collections at the Parc de la Ciutadella, in the Martorell Museum and the
Laboratory of Nature.
