World's Most Beautiful Tropical Islands ( Seen from Space )

These remarkable images show some of the sunniest, tropical islands as viewed from satellites from space and the International Space Station.

The earth has an estimated 400,000 islands and while some are sprawling in size others cover just a few kilometres.

These images show some of the remotest areas on the globe including Mataiva Atoll, part of Tuamotu Archipelago in South Pacific Ocean, Maupiti Island, The British Virgin Islands and Tahiti in French Polynesia.

Certain islands are home to unique species of that do not exist anywhere else in the world - like the Galapagos.

While others have existed for thousands of years, islands can also be formed through volcanism - shown in some of these images - as molten rock emerges from the Earth's crust below the sea to form mountains which eventually rise about the water's surface.

Other islands would have also be formed from chunks of continental crust that became surrounded by water as sea levels rose at the end of last Ice Age.

Developments in recent years have made way for new islands, ranging from man-made artificial islands to sandbar-topped reefs built by corals.

With its own International Space Station and vast array of satellites NASA has seen every island under the sun.
